By the end of the course, delegates should be able to:

Industry, safety and regulations

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and your responsibilities as an operator.
• Conform to the manufacturer’s requirements as per the technical data, and to relevant regulations and legislation.

The machine and its controls

• Locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions.
• Locate and identify the steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions.
• Safely mount and dismount the engine.
• Start and stop the engine, and move the machine off and stop it safely.
• Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas.

Planning the lift

• Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area.
• Locate, identify and explain safe working loads and the lifting capacity chart, and explain different lifting configurations and working ranges.
• Identify and explain different lifting procedures, and explain which tasks could fall into each category.
• Identify and explain centres of gravity, and calculate estimated weights of loads.
• Identify any overhead and proximity hazards.
• Agree the signal codes and hand signals, direction of movement, safe working and the safe landing and placement zone with the slinger/signaller.

Carrying out the lift

• Ensure the excavator is in a safe condition for attachments to be lifted.
• Check load integrity and security by carrying out a trial lift.
• Lift and move a load to a designated position in a safe and controlled manner, ensuring minimum uncontrolled movement.
• Environmental considerations.
• Carry out all out-of-service and securing procedures.
